How Prism Works
Prism technology is the world’s first digital brain biomarker developed by applying machine learning models to register amygdala data from fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) with signals from EEG (electroencephalogram). Prism uses the amygdala-based biomarker because the amygdala is overactive in PTSD, and it is involved in fear, aggression, and the fight-flight-freeze response.
By learning to regulate the amygdala-based biomarker, you will learn to take back control of your symptoms and your life.
During a Prism session, you will explore finding your own mental strategy that changes the Prism simulation. When you think about a personal memory, emotion or experience that makes you feel calm and safe, the level of the amygdala-based biomarker goes down and the animated characters in the simulation will sit down and lower their voices. Yes, you are controlling the simulation!
Treatment is interactive and allows patients to determine what specifically helps them manage their own stress response. You will practice the mental strategy that is effective in the clinic and in your daily life.
Studies have demonstrated that 67% of patients report a significant improvement in their symptoms three months after completing treatment. Potential side effects are mild fatigue and headaches that resolve on their own.

What a Prism Session Entails
You will be fitted with an EEG headset that has small electrodes; these measure brain activity.
You will watch a computer simulation in a quiet room that has agitated animated characters. You will use mental strategies to get the characters to calm down. This will happen as the signals from the EEG show that the amygdala is less overactive.
These strategies include reflecting on a memory or sitting with an emotion to help calm the amygdala. Slowly, the characters will become more calm as the strategies are put to use.
Prism treatment is 15 sessions over eight weeks that last 30 minutes. Following treatment, mental strategies will become second nature to help navigate daily life without feeling on edge at all times. Booster sessions may be needed afterwards in certain situations.

Is Prism Right For Me?
Prism is a reasonable option for individuals suffering with the symptoms of PTSD, which includes unwanted nightmares, flashbacks, exaggerated startle, and hypervigilance. You may be a candidate if:-
- You have not seen much benefit with the use of psychiatric medications, or have experienced side effects in the past
-
- The prospect of processing the trauma in psychotherapy is daunting
-
- You want a personalized way to improve the symptoms you are struggling with
